What is hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is a build up of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain which causes pressure on the brain.
In short “it’s a drain for your brain” Check out this silly video here-

Why is this important to me?
I have hydrocephalus, and two ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts! I’ve had them my whole life, which means many brain surgeries as a young child, and 2 so far as an adult to either place or replace malfunctioning or worn out shunts. Other procedures include spinal taps, and many cat-scans, x rays or MRIs, ultrasounds, neurological and vision tests. Brain surgery is the only treatment for my hydrocephalus. I’ve been very fortunate to have few and minor symptoms throughout my life while my shunts are functioning properly, with the main one being headaches.
The goal of hydrocephalus awareness month is to raise awareness and funds for research, so that hopefully one day me and the over one million Americans living with hydrocephalus may have a treatment plan that doesn’t involve brain surgery!
